The term "AI agent" has become one of the most overloaded phrases in enterprise technology. Depending on who you ask, it means anything from a glorified chatbot to a fully autonomous system that runs your business while you sleep.

What we mean by AI agent
An AI agent is a system that can take a goal, break it into steps, execute those steps using tools, and adapt its approach based on what it learns along the way. The key distinction from a standard AI assistant is autonomy — an agent does not wait for instructions at every step.
In enterprise settings, this typically means an AI system that can:
- Query internal databases and APIs
- Draft and send communications
- Process documents and extract structured data
- Make routing decisions based on business rules
- Escalate to humans when confidence is low
Where agents deliver value today
The highest-value use cases we see consistently are ones where a skilled person currently spends most of their time on process rather than judgement.
Document processing pipelines — proposals, contracts, compliance filings. An agent reads, extracts, validates, and routes. A human reviews exceptions.
Internal operations — onboarding workflows, procurement approvals, IT ticket triage. Agents handle the predictable 80% and surface the rest.
Research and analysis — competitive intelligence, market scanning, due diligence. Agents gather and synthesise; humans decide.
The mistakes to avoid
The most common failure mode is building an agent that is technically impressive but organisationally useless. It automates something nobody asked to have automated, or it requires more human oversight than the process it replaced.
Start with the workflow, not the technology. Ask: where does a capable person spend time on tasks that do not require their full capability? That is where agents earn their keep.
